Compaction Has Begun!
Earth works and compaction for the Stage Two and Three buildings commenced on June 10th. The compaction process involves dropping a 15 tonne cement weight repeatedly on the ground from a large crane in a grid pattern. This is necessary because of CERES’ landfill history. The work is scheduled to be finished by the end of July. We would also like to welcome our new builders to the project W.O. Longmuir Pty Ltd

CERES Centre-A Zero Emissions Building

We are aiming for the CERES Centre to be a zero emissions building. Every aspect of the Centre from design through to delivery, will aim to minimise waste, water and energy use to achieve a truly carbon neutral building.

Currently we are:

  • Exploring the exciting option of creating renewable energy onsite through a wood gasifier Combined Heat and Power plant (CHP). Using wood gasification as an energy source has the advantage of being able to provide on-demand heat and electricity generation supplied from a sustainably harvested fuel, like recycled/sustainable wood.
  • Examining sustainable timber options. We’re proposing to incorporate timber extensively in the Stage Two and Three buildings for structural, cladding, fit-out and decorative elements. We recently held a Timber Forum on the 29th April 2008 where we brought together a diverse group of experts in this field to discuss the best possible options for sourcing sustainable timber for the Centre.Read More
  • Researching leading ‘green’ kitchens and restaurants both nationally and internationally to help us design the most sustainable kitchens for Stage Two of the Centre. From the menu design, material and appliance selection, cooking techniques, waste disposal, food packaging and more, all will be scrutinised to the highest level to ensure environmental best practice is achieved.
